World Congress to Host World Premier of the Film "Head Games"

World Congress to Host World Premier of the Film "Head Games"

IBIA is pleased to host the world premier of the film, “Head Games”, which will be screened for the first time on Wednesday, March 21 at 8:00pm, during the 2012 Ninth World Congress on Brain Injury in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Following his graduation from Harvard where he had been an All-Ivy football player, Chris Nowinski’s career path took an unusual turn-he became a professional wrestler in the WWE. After suffering multiple concussions in football and wrestling Chris has become one of the world’s most well-known advocates of educating athletes and coaches of the short and long term dangers of concussions in all sports. Currently a PhD candidate at Boston University, the movie “Head Games’ is Chris’s story, with expert commentary from leading neurologists, neuro-pathologists, neuro-surgeons and neuro-psychologists. Produced and directed by internationally honored filmmakers Steve James (“Hoop Dreams”) and Bruce Sheridan along with Pulitzer Prize nominated Alan Schwarz, this world premiere movie takes a hard look at the real potential dangers of amateur and professional contact and collision sports.
All World Congress registrants are invited to attend this unique event from 8:00pm to 11:00pm at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre’s Pentland Suite on Level 1. For more information on the World Congress, click here.

Comments: I've had a chance to work with Chris as a member of the Chicago Concussion Coalition. He is an incredible individual, who even today is fighting the consequences of head injury. I am hoping that I have a chance to say hi to him after my presentation at the 9th All World Congress of the International Brain Injury Association this March. I'm presenting a poster on how optometric vision therapy improved the quality of life of one of my patients. Keep posted here for more details about this meeting and my adventures in Scotland! DM

Dr. Sue Barry — Science and Splash

From COVD's Blog.... Dr. Mozlin says: Don’t miss this one!  Dr. Sue Barry is a neuroscientist and a Professor at Mt. Holyoke College.  In this video, she discusses how vision therapy transformed not only her vision, but her beliefs about the neuroplasticity of the adult brain.  My favorite part is how she describes discovering the beauty of 3 dimensional vision in her everyday world- the sink faucet, the snowfall, the trees.  What’s your favorite part?...

Survey Shows Less Than One in Five Infants Receive Critical First-Year Eye Exam

Survey Shows Less Than One in Five Infants Receive Critical First-Year Eye Exam

Most Americans are unaware that one in 10 infants in the U.S. has an undetected vision problem which, if left untreated, can lead to developmental delays, permanent vision problems and in rare cases, life-threatening health risks. Although most parents are aware that vision disorders can be detected in infants, few take action. Only 18 percent of parents who participated in the American Optometric Association's (AOA) 2011 American Eye-Q® survey report taking their infant to an eye doctor for a comprehensive assessment before the child's first birthday.

Watch for It!! NEW AOANews Column about Technology

Knowing the importance of the role technology plays in the lives of our patients and the doctors who serve them, the American Optometric Association has asked Illinois College of Optometry faculty members, Dr. Dominick Maino and Dr. Geoffrey Goodfellow to co-author a brand new AOANews column on technology. The very first column discusses the latest in new Heads Up Displays (HUDs) that will be built into a pair of glasses, motorcycle helmets and car windshields.
Drs. Goodfellow and Maino previously authored the technology column in the journal Optometric Education, an official publication of the Association of the Schools and Colleges of Optometry. Dr. Maino was one of the very first optometrists to ever author a book on technology which was entitled, Computer Applications in Optometry. It was originally published by Buttersworth in 1989 along with his brother, and fellow Illinois College of Optometry graduate Dr. Joseph Maino and UMSL School of Optometry faculty Dr. David Davidson. Maino and Goodfellow also serve on the AOA's Technology Working Group. Dr. Maino is the current AOA spokesperson on all things 3D as well (3D movies, TV, video games and in the class room).

The Illinois College of Optometry has always encouraged its faculty to be at the cutting edge of all they do whether it is in the area of glaucoma, amblyopia, or refractive care. Drs. Maino and Goodfellow just take this to the next logical step in this important AOANews column.

Finally, watch for an announcement by the Vision Performance Institute of Pacific University about their up and coming 6th Annual VPI Research Conference. Dr. Maino was asked to present at this as well. He will discuss how to improve the 3D viewing audience so they can better enjoy their 3D experience.

Neuroplasticity + Enthusiasm = Change

...For millennia, however, we were oblivious to our enormous creative capabilities. We had no idea that our brains were changing in response to our actions and attitudes, every day of our lives. So we unconsciously and randomly shaped our brains and our latter years because we believed we had an immutable brain that was at the mercy of our genes.....Nothing could be further from the truth....
