Autistic Individuals Are Superior In Multiple Areas
Autistic Individuals Are Superior In Multiple Areas
....We must stop considering the different brain structure of autistic individuals to be a deficiency, as research reveals that many autistics - not just "savants" - have qualities and abilities that may exceed those of people who do not have the condition, according to a provocative article published today in Nature by Dr. Laurent Mottron at the University of Montreal's Centre for Excellence in Pervasive Development Disorders. "Recent data and my own personal experience suggest it's time to start thinking of autism as an advantage in some spheres, not a cross to bear," Mottron said. ...
Comments: I do not wish to offend...and I do not wish to be considered non-PC, but is this a bunch of "hooey"or what? Individuals with autism have many strengths and weaknesses...can't we just include them in the wide varieties of humans who have much to offer without making them super heroes? (Maybe I do wish to be non-PC) DM

Multifocal Versus Single Vision Lenses Intervention to Slow Progression of Myopia in School-age Children: A Meta-analysis
Multifocal Versus Single Vision Lenses Intervention to Slow Progression of Myopia in School-age Children: A Meta-analysis
....Myopia in school-aged children is a major public health problem ..... We systematically searched currently available randomized controlled trials that compared the effects of MLs and SVLs in children. A meta-analysis of nine of these trials showed that MLs with powers ranging from +1.50 to +2.00D were associated with a statistically significantly decrease in myopia progression in school-aged children compared with SVLs. ....

Interactive Play With Blocks Found To Facilitate Development Of Spatial Vocabulary
.....Parents and researchers have long speculated that play with construction toys might offer a rich environment that would support later learning in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.....
Prefrontal Cortex Epigenetic Signatures In Brain Tissue Of People With Autism
Prefrontal Cortex Epigenetic Signatures In Brain Tissue Of People With Autism
....Prefrontal cortex neurons from subjects with autism show changes in chromatin structures at hundreds of loci genome-wide, revealing considerable overlap between genetic and epigenetic risk maps of developmental brain disorders....
Best-Estimate Clinical Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorders Vary Widely
Best-Estimate Clinical Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorders Vary Widely
Clinical distinctions among categorical diagnostic subtypes of autism spectrum disorders were not reliable even across sites with well-documented fidelity using standardized diagnostic instruments. Results support the move from existing subgroupings of autism spectrum disorders to dimensional descriptions of core features of social affect and fixated, repetitive behaviors, together with characteristics such as language level and cognitive function.

Nine Possible Outcomes from Vision Therapy
Nine Possible Outcomes from Vision Therapy
1. Learning becomes easier2. Reading level and speed increases
3. Time spent on homework decreases
4. The ability to follow moving objects (a thrown ball) improves
5. Seeing objects nearby or at a distance improves
6. Visualizing mental images (including depth perception, orientation and awareness of where you are in relation to other people/objects) becomes easier7. Symptoms of vision problem (i.e. headaches, fatigue, double vision) improve or resolve
8. Attention span increases
9. Awareness of time and space improves
Comment: I have to admit to being jealous of Dr. Kellye Knueppel and her team. She does so many thing right! Check out this blog for the latest info on Optometric Vision Therapy. DM

Re-alignment of the eyes, with prisms and with eye surgery, affects postural stability differently in children with strabismus
Re-alignment of the eyes, with prisms and with eye surgery, affects postural stability differently in children with strabismus
....Binocular visual and motor changes affect body sway; adaptive mechanisms induced by eye re-alignment after surgery allow improved postural control. The absence of dependency on distance in postural stability in strabismic children could be due to their impaired depth perception and to the poor integrity of the visual signal required to control posture. ...
Comments: Once again, science has finally caught up with the OEPF optometric pioneers...who observed that vision affected posture, "sway"...ect. DM
